“The 2023 Riesling Trocken Laubenheimer Karthäuser is deep, pure and refined but impressively intense and aromatic on the beautifully balanced and distinctive nose that intermingles concentrated, ripe fruit aromas with finely weathered terroir notes from red sandstone. Accordingly generous and juicy yet always fine and crystalline on the palate, this is a mouth-filling, as if not fully dry, yet very elegant and generous Riesling that is reminiscent of certain Saar Rieslings or those from Nackenheim (Rheinhessen). In fact, the Karthäuser was bottled with “just three or four grams per liter of residual sugar,” as Martin Tesch reports on the phone. It is a complete, sensual and silky-textured Riesling with generous fruit and an exceptionally long and intense finish. This wine is made to surprise, and perhaps with 2021(?), it is on the highest level Martin (or better: his son Johannes) Tesch has reached so far. 13% stated alcohol. Stelvin screw cap. 2020 Karthäuser Riesling trocken

The 2020 Riesling Karthäuser is discreet and fine on the clear and elegant nose, which reveals a ripe and slightly flinty-scented bouquet of ripe, red apples with notes of crushed (sand) stones. Dense and concentrated on the palate, this is a stunningly rich yet still elegant, fine and structured Karthäuser with fine tannins and a certain phenol reduction that asks for more aeration. This is an impressive terroir wine with a long and salty finish. Very promising. 12.5% alcohol.

The nose here is spicy with white pepper, and a dusty/powdered aspect to the red fruits. The mouth has brilliant, penetrating acidity, and it is round and chewy with red fruits. The acidity makes this wine mouthwatering and there is very good energy, a noble austerity, and relative fullness of body.

Round and piquant on the palate, this is an intense, tight, complex and persistent dry Riesling. It reveals the complex and structured terroir expression that makes the Laubenheimer Karthäuser an outstanding wine almost every year. Tasted as a sample in May and then from bottle in June 2020.

2018 Karthäuser Riesling trocken

From warm, early-ripening terroir, Tesch’s 2018 Karthäuser Riesling Trocken offers a clear and bright bouquet with intense and ripe fruit aromas but also a distinctive purity and coolish character. Fullbodied and juicy yet fresh and precise, this is a powerful but also well-structured and sustainable dry Riesling cultivated on weathered red sandstone soils. The wine reveals enormous mineral vitality and tension on the sustainable finish, but it also doesn’t deny the sunny vintage. “That’s what we are looking for,” says Martin Tesch. “The vintage is part of the terroir, and I want to smell and sniff the vintage still in ten years from this wine.” He will. 2017 Karthäuser Riesling trocken

From a well-protected, southwest-facing vineyard on weathered red sandstone, the early-ripening 2017 Karthäuser Riesling Trocken is very clear and fresh on the deep and intense, complex and wellconcentrated yet precise and spicy, herbal/floral and lemon-scented bouquet with its discreet flinty notes. Full-bodied and round but also pure, fresh and mineral on the palate, this is a complex and pretty powerful dry Riesling with a long and structured, powerful and sustainable finish that also reveals some fine but firm tannins and good acidity. An impressive, terroir-driven and age-worthy Riesling that needs pork rather than just fish as a pairing partner. Tasted two times in July and August 2019 (AP 08 18). Drinking Date 2022 -2040

Amphitheatre of weathered sandstone facing south west retains warmth and its grapes are the first to ripen. Broad, earthy nose with immediate appeal on the nose and then very pronounced acidity. Very much a game of two halves, this wine. I’d wait until next year before broaching it to see how the nose and palate integrate. Really vibrant on the palate but the acidity dominates for now. Drink: 2019-2024.

2016 Karthäuser Riesling trocken

From a warm, early ripening terroir on the weathered sandstone soils of the Rotliegend period, the 2016 Nahe Riesling Laubenheimer Karthäuser Trocken intermixes tropical fruit aromas with precise mineral and herbal aromas on the bright, fine and multilayered nose—fascinating! On the palate, this is a highly finessed and elegant Riesling: dry, pure and salty-mineral, with very delicate acidity and lingering salinity. Great class. The wine is widening on the palate, conquering the whole mouth with gorgeous fruit juice that is not just lush and intense but also pure, fresh and mineral, with gooseberry flavors, great finesse and tension. The 2016 is one of the finest Karthäuser Rieslings from Martin Tesch that I can remember. A highly elegant and complex Riesling with a fine but tight structure and a pure, long and stimulatingly salty finish.
